6 Ways To Help Your Baby Love Their Food

I’ve weaned my son and my daughter very differently. My son even now is a very fussy eater and eats small amounts. I compare the amount that he eat when her was my daughters age (I kept a diary) and he eat nowhere near as much, it was such a frustrating time. Weaning, no matter how small the portions, can drastically reduce the amount of milk your child takes in a day. So, when I had a son at the time not drinking enough milk or eating hardly anything I found it just consumed our lives I practically begged him to eat or drink, which was silly because he didn’t understand! So this time round I decided to wean my daughter a different way.

6 Months

The general advice these days is to wait until 6 months. I think the best time to start on baby rice is between 5 and 6 months (as long as you feel your baby is ready). I weaned Mason at 4 months and looking back now, it was just too early for him. I started to give Mia baby rice at 5 and a half months, just in the mornings then eventually evenings too, this got her used to the concept of eating from a spoon.

Don’t rush it

There’s a saying my friend told me ‘under 1 is just for fun’. Start offering different vegetables at least every 3 days. I say 3 days because within this time you will be able to see if that food has affected your baby or they are allergic to it. Also don’t rush each meal, because it’s a new experience for them they won’t eat 1 spoonful after another, mine takes a mini break for smiles every few mouthfuls.

Instead of offering the pureed fruit or veg by itself straight away. Start by adding 1/2 a teaspoon of the puree mixed with 3 teaspoons of baby rice and milk. Then on the second day add 1 teaspoon of puree to 3 teaspoons of baby rice and milk. On the third day add 2 teaspoons of puree to 2 teaspoons of baby rice and milk. Then just keep adding a teaspoon of puree and reducing the baby rice and milk until it is purely puree. Doing it this way helps your baby get used to the taste gradually with the taste that she is used to MILK. Instead of the experience being ‘whoa what is this’ they have the chance to adapt to the taste and get used to it. I use this method every time she tries something new, even meals. Soon she will be so used to eating new foods that I won’t need to add any amount if baby rice and milk. I didn’t do this with Mason and I so regret it!

Be positive

When your baby eats, without being too over-the-top (like Darren is it scares her), let her know she’s doing something well. Making it a positive experience so they feel happy every time it’s time to eat.

Keep calm

If they don’t finish the puree you’ve prepared then don’t worry and just start again next time. I made this mistake with Mason and got quite upset when he didn’t eat a lot, which he would have sensed and possibly made him anxious for his next meal. It’s normal for their hunger to change just like ours does.


Once they’ve had their ‘first tastes’, offer a variety of different meals and puddings so far Mia has never turned her nose up to anything and polishes off every meal, she even has seconds! I’m hoping this continues.

Every baby is different and only you know your baby best. When they turn to toddlers most go through a fussy period, I’ve only just figured out the trick to get my toddler to finish his meals. These rules worked for my daughter and I will keep updating with how she’s eating so we know how WELL these rules work, so far brilliantly!   2. definitely don’t rush it when kids are ready they are ready aslong as they are healthy they’ll get there in the end Lottie wasnt keen on being weaned so I just went at her pace and she loves her food now! thanks for linking up to #kidscorner x

    • It’s worth taking it slow to have a child that just loves food! I made the mistake with my son unfortunately but luckily this approach with my daughter works magically! x


  3. I have a fussy eater and I feel like I did try all these things…but I probably just tried too hard and it all back fired!! I’m try to keep calm these days though and not let it stress me out. One day he’ll be eating the same as the rest of us (or else!!) 😉 Thanks for linking up to #TheList xx

  4. I’ve been pretty lucky, both of my boys are great eaters. Finn went through a little fussy period when Rory was born. I realised I was letting him snack more and wasn’t involving him in the preparing of meals anymore. Once I changed this his eating went back to normal again. I agree that positivity, staying calm and providing variety are all important points when feeding kids.
